How to read this market
A handicap applies the displayed positive or negative line to the selected side before the outcome is assessed. A negative line requires the side to win by a larger margin; a positive line gives it a scoring allowance. Read the exact sign and unit on the card. Different handicap formats can handle a tie on the adjusted score differently, so the bookmaker’s market rules remain decisive. Full-game and quarter spreads do not use interchangeable scores. Confirm whether overtime belongs to the selected period.
A selection example
A side at −4.5 needs to finish at least five counted points ahead in the specified period. A side at +4.5 can lose by four and still cover. A different spread can reverse the result of the same game.
What matters in this sport
Basketball markets usually measure points, but a full game, half and quarter are separate periods. Overtime can change the game total and margin when the selected market includes it. A level score at the end of regulation does not by itself settle a full-game winner pick. Check the stated period instead of assuming every result market has three outcomes.
